removal of content[edit]

Hey, H69. You seem to be removing content without explanation, and in topics that seem to indicate you may have a point of view? No objection to any other admin lifting this block once the editor is engaging in a way they believe means they'll be productive in future. Valereee (talk) 21:31, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Valeree! I'm sorry I'm new to Wikipedia editing so I apologize for not putting an explanation first. I've been trying to remove "East Village" as a Gay Village on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gay_villages. This is because it does not fulfill the definition for a gay village. The description says gay villages contain gay restaurants, cafes, and other small businesses that attract LGBT individuals. I am an actual gay man that lives in the area and can confirm there aren't any gay restaurants, gay cafes, gay bookstores, gay clubs, organizations, etc in the area. Just because an area has a gay bar and hosts Pride once a year does not mean it is a "Gay Village." Also, look at the website used in the citation: https://desmoines.gaycities.com/ It is extremely outdated. The East Village is not a Gay Village. Harryhay69 (talk) 01:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, H69! I've lifted the block, thanks for coming in.
I would agree with you that the source doesn't support calling the area a gay village. However, believing you are correct doesn't mean you're allowed to WP:EDITWAR.
We work collaboratively by persuading people to see our point of view. What you need to do is point out that the source being used can't be considered a WP:RELIABLESOURCES (and even if it were, that source is not using the term "gay village") and ask the people who want to include the entry on the list to provide a reliable source that is calling it that.
When you make edits that someone else is reverting, instead of reverting their reversion, go to the talk page, open a new section, and start a discussion, asking for a reliable source supporting the inclusion. If you open a discussion and no one shows up to join you in that discussion after a day or so, you can revert again and this time in your edit summary mention that you've started a discussion at the talk. If after that you get reverted again, that's when it's time to ask for help/advice, which you can do at WP:Teahouse. Or in this case possibly at WT:WikiProject LGBT Studies.
I suspect this may have to do with the topic area, which is in general considered contentious. There are often many people watching the various articles in such topic areas, and some may have seen your removal of content as being non-neutral. FWIW, the fact you are gay and live in the area doesn't matter here. What matters is what reliable sources are saying. Valereee (talk) 13:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so right now I will start a new section on the talk page for a discussion. If no one replies to it/adds their support, I can then revert the change but mention I've started a discussion in the talk page.
The reason why this page ("List of Gay Villages") is seeing more traffic is because I posted about it on Reddit. I was having a discussion there between other people that live in Des Moines on whether or not the East Village is considered a "Gayborhood" (or "Gay Village"). I argued that just because there's a few gay bars doesn't mean it's a gayborhood. I used this Wikipedia page as evidence that no one cared to even include the East Village as a gay destination- because it simply isn't one. You will notice shortly after I posted the link to the page someone from Des Moines added it to spite me.
For now I will start a discussion on the Talk Page. If no one defends it's addition, I will revert it if that's okay. Harryhay69 (talk) 13:29, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I wondered why there were suddenly so many IPs trying to add the East Village all of a sudden. As a side note, don't edit the page or the talk page while logged out, as editing the same article or talk page as "two accounts" can get you blocked for sock puppetry. Valereee (talk) 13:36, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I never edited Wikipedia before so this is all new to me. As someone that's been called the F slur many times in Des Moines, it's safe to say I don't feel like it's a "gay getaway." However, I understand that citations matter more than feelings. If no one adds appropriate citations I will plan on removing the East Village from the list. Hope you find you like it here and decide to keep contributing! Valereee (talk) 14:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Valereee! I'm having some issues. I did what you asked me to and added a discussion on the Talk page and waited a day before editing the page. My discussion was then archived/deleted and the East Village was added back onto the list. (If you check the Talk page's history you'll see someone with the IP Address 75.162.4.109 deleted my discussion and then proceeded to add their own.) Meanwhile, the citation they're using is STILL the same one that doesn't even say the East Village is a "Gay Village." Any help? What do I do? Harryhay69 (talk) 03:03, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lemme take a look. Valereee (talk) 14:14, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to have bothered ya- I went to the Teahouse and they were able to help me. The anon users haven’t reverted the changes yet. Harryhay69 (talk) 14:17, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, you got good advice there. I've temporarily protected the page from IP editors to see if we can get them to start discussing. Protection will expire in a week, just wp:ping me there if the disruption starts back up. Valereee (talk) 14:38, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
